How to find your signature perfume?

How to find your signature perfume?

‘What perfume should I wear?’ is the question that many of you come across once in a while. As said by the International Beauty Expert Maxime Poulin “Fragrances truly become a signature for you—it’s a part of who you are.” Whether you wear a perfume for yourself or to show others, it plays a significant role in our lives. Your favourite fragrance can take you back to a happy memory and make you feel the same way you did in that moment. All thanks to our olfactory memory.

Choosing a perfume is a bit challenging but not as much as selecting your signature perfume. Some people hope to find a perfume that would suit their personality but everything is not that simple, isn’t it?

Wondering how to choose perfume for yourself? Let’s begin with the list of things to keep in mind.

1. First understand what are you smelling:

Floral

Like your perfume with a hint of romance? Try floral fragrances that are inspired from sweet smelling flowers like roses, carnations, jasmine, gardenias and orange blossoms. It is a tender fragrance with a hint of femininity. Excite your senses with a feminine floral perfume, Coach Floral Eau De Parfum.

Citrus
Have you come across a
fresh smelling perfume? It had probably been citrus because that’s how a citrusy fresh smell is. This fragrance qualifies to be an everyday perfume in hot summers to get a burst of freshness. Rejuvenate your senses with Versace Yellow Diamond Eau De Toilette.

Woody
Familiar with the smell of old libraries or a dank room? That’s woody. With a mix of wood and moss, it is the kind of fragrance that gives you the impression of wood that is several years old. It has a strong and classical appeal. Invigorate your personality with Dior Sauvage Eau De Parfum and for a sensuous appeal, try D&G The One Eau De Toilette Spray.

Oriental
A slightly powdery smell with a fusion of musky and earthy fragrances. Ingredients like musk and amber make it perfect to wear on a special day. Wear this fragrance to get the attention of a special someone. Entice your ladylove with spicy notes of cinnamon and cloves, and make her stay for the pleasant sandalwood with Hugo Boss Bottled Eau De Toilette Spray.
Green
Preferred to wear during the daytime, Green fragrances reminds us of fresh leaves and newly mown grass. This unisex fragrance is graciously mild and make it ideal for a casual occasion. Evoke freshness with a herbal fragrance, Jaguar Green Eau De Toilette Spray for Men and for an invigorating experience, try Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Scent Spray For Women.

Oceanic
Confused about which perfume to wear on a job interview? Oceanic is the key. Specially crafted scents with marine notes to remind you of the fresh sea air, and sometimes fresh linen and clean laundry. This powerful and refreshing fragrance rejuvenates your mind and soul. Soothe your senses from aromatic notes of the ocean with Davidoff Cool Water Eau De Toilette for Men or Davidoff Cool Water Eau De Toilette For Women.

Spicy
This fragrance is linked with warm spices, incense sticks, smoke, and leather. Spicy fragrances possess their own enchanting scents and are very opulent in an old fashioned sense. These fragrances are perfect for brunches and casual events. Try Viktor & Rolf Spice Bomb Eau De Parfum for an explosion of spices in your senses.

2. Begin with Lighter Scents

Now that you are aware about the types of fragrances, it is time to go out there and try on some best smelling perfumes. It is suggested to begin the process of choosing a perfume with lighter scents such as musky or aquatic. Aqueous scents are refreshing and musky fragrances are subtle, clean-laundry types. Half of the population can’t even smell musky scents. Thus, start from mild fragrances, then move to citrusy to floral to intense woody scents at the end. Here is a fragrance to begin with if you are a man, D&G Light Blue Eau De Toilette and for a woman, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau De Toilette Spray.

3. Limit to trying only 3 scents at a time

While trying out perfumes, at times we end up spraying too many perfumes in the air or on the tester or on your skin and smelling them one after the other. Although you save time, it leaves your olfactory senses overwhelmed. They get confused between two scents if too many scents are bombarded one after the another on olfactory senses.

Want to get the best fragrance for yourself? Then try only a few perfumes at a time. Give each of them the required time. Take a break between perfumes. You may even want to sniff coffee beans in between each of the fragrances to erase the memory of the previous scent. What experts recommend is to try maximum upto 3 at once. As your olfactory bulb has to put more efforts than it is used to.

4. Sample fragrances the right way

The most important part of finding a suitable fragrance is, of course, testing it first. Spritz it on a pulse point where your skin is warm naturally, like your elbow or wrist, so the perfume will really heat up and disclose its true self in a while. Try your selected perfumes on distinct areas of your skin for at least a day before you come to a conclusion. This way, you can really admire the perfume and understand how it will develop on your skin. If several visits to the store to sample new fragrances sounds tiring then remember, these stores have small samples behind the counters only for you, you just have to ask.

5. Don’t rush the process

Most people buy perfume just after the first impression. Be it an expensive cologne or an inexpensive perfume, the idea is to be patient and see how it evolves in a few hours. Perfume notes play their part here. Essentially there are three elements that make up a perfume. When you first spray a perfume, the notes you will encounter are known as 'top notes' or ‘opening notes,’ which is why it is also referred to as the first impression of the perfume. An opening note stays for about 20 minutes, then they turn into the heart notes. The heart remains for around 4 hours. Eventually, these fade into the enduring base notes. Thus do not ever conclude in the first go, whether a perfume is the one for you.

As you have several hours of developing scent to experience after the first spritz.

6. Consider your lifestyle while choosing a signature scent

When it comes to actually choosing a fragrance that suits you, it’s not about saying you like the smell of sandalwood and going with the fragrance that has it, it is more about  figuring out how a scent will function and fit into your current lifestyle. There’s something to be said about portraying yourself in a specific way how you expect people to interpret. It may sound strange for a perfume but it is what we do with our clothes, shoes, hair and in fact our overall appearance. So, why not for a perfume?
